Hotels in New York

Among the issues involved in planning a trip to New York, let’s face it, choosing lodging is what matters most. The “problem” of New York in this sense is that the lodgings are very expensive and those who want to pay cheap in lodging, cheap even, have to give up something, be it location or comfort. Expect to pay in a hotel without luxury at least 200-250 dollars a day for a couple. If money is no problem, better yet, New York has from simple hotels to the most luxurious ones.

Unlike other American cities, do not expect the rooms to be oversized. Overall, NY hotels have small rooms and basic comfort, which does not have to be a problem, since a lot of the time in the city we go through the streets.

Tip: – Give preference to accommodations that are close to a subway station, this will make it easier to move around the city.
– Know that in NY hotels, in addition to the daily rate, there is a tax charged separately. There is a 14.75% tax, plus $ 3.50 per day.

The variety of accommodation in the city is huge and they are in different areas. Manhattan is certainly the place most sought after by tourists because it is the island that concentrates the main sights of NY. It is worth remembering that, in the Manhattan organization, the streets (horizontal sense) are enumerated and grow from the south to the north of the island, while the avenues cut the streets vertically and grow from east to west. See here a map of Manhattan neighborhoods.

In Manhattan, the heart of Midtown (between 40th St and 59th St and Lexington and 9th Ave) is where most tourists like to stay as it is truly a prime location. In this region is the Theater District, where is Times Square and the Broadway theaters. Staying in the area you will be close to many sights and you can do a lot of walking. It is a tourist region, busy day and night, ideal for those who visit the city for the first time or for those who are short time and want to watch the main sights. In this area, the Distrikt, Hilton Times Square, Citizenm and Pod 39, a hotel with small rooms, is ideal for those who do not want to spend a lot.

Although Midtown, Times Square and Theater District are the places most tourists seek, there are several other equally or even more interesting areas to stay that offer a more authentic experience of the city. Lower Manhattan, for example, is indicated for those who do not want to be in the buzz and constant movement of people. Already the Upper East Side and Upper West Side areas are good to stay in a residential setting with apartments, luxury homes and good shopping. In the Upper West Side you will find the Beacon Hotel and the Upper East Side the Courtyard NY Manhattan. Already in Lower Manhattan are the Holiday Inn Lower East Side and the Conrad which has a very beautiful view of the Hudson River and New Jersey.

Chelsea is a young neighborhood with good restaurants and art galleries; Is a relatively quiet location and close to Times Square. In this region, close to Penn Station and many shops that drive Brazilians mad, are the budget-friendly Fairfield Inn & Suites, the 35th St Hilton Garden Inn (near Macy’s) and the Courtyard by Mariott, Close to the Empire State Building. Hells Kitchen is interesting for those who want to stay close to Times Square and Theater District without participating at all times of the confusion of that area.

Soho is great for anyone who wants to shop, find designer stores or a more alternative environment. In this area are the Mondrian Hotel and Sixt Soho.

To stay close to the hustle and bustle, accommodation close to the Meatpacking is good. In this area, our suggestion is The Standard Hotel which is modern, well located, and is one of the highlights of the region’s nightlife.

To save some solutions are as follows:
1 – Make the reservation in advance and search the hotels well;

2 – Do not stay in Manhattan, which is more central and therefore more expensive. If you want to save money and be able to afford a central location, look for accommodations in Brooklyn (Downtown Brooklyn and Williamsburg), Queens (Astoria) or Jersey City (Hoboken) – and even staying in those places, the closer to Manhattan and the subway, the better .

Opting for accommodation outside of Manhattan prices will be better, but time to the island, higher. This is a better option for those who do not want to return to the hotel in the middle of the day, for those who prioritize the economy or who will have more time available in the city and do not have to make everything run. It is worth remembering that consulting the subway lines that pass close to your hotel is always a good policy, because as the sights are concentrated in Manhattan, it will be necessary to transport there is viable.

In Astoria you find more economical alternatives like the Nesva Hotel and the Four Points and in Brooklyn the Sheraton Brooklyn and the Aloft, both near the subway;

3 – Stay in a hostel. Nice option for those who like meeting people from all over the world and sharing a room with other people;

4 – Rent an apartment. Apartment rental is a very widespread business in NY, especially for those who spend a few weeks in the city. There are apartments for all tastes and budgets, from those as (or more) expensive as the hotels, as the cheaper apartments. The advantage of staying in an apartment is that you can avail of utilities such as a washing machine, stove and refrigerator, which can lead to savings if you make your own food or wash your clothes. The location also influences the price – Staying in Manhattan, for example, should be more expensive than staying in Queens. For those who are looking for economics, an interesting option is to rent a private or shared room in someone’s house – sharing the room or the house is a very natural practice in the United States.

Watch out for the fact that there is a “fight” between the people who rent their apartments and the NY hotel chain. According to a city law, it is not allowed to rent an apartment without the presence of the owner of the apartment for a period of less than 30 days. Even though this law exists, practice is commonplace in the city. For renting apartments and rooms, some options are Airbnb, Windu and HomeAway.
